MSWU Release: Contribute to Strike Fund

Friends and Comrades,

It has been more than 5 months since the unfortunate incident of 18th July 2012 in Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Manesar. While the management of Maruti Suzuki had always suppressed our legitimate demands inside the factory since before last year, from 18th July onwards, an unprecedented scale of attack was let loose on us by the Haryana government instead of impartially investigating the facts and roots of the unfortunate incident, which we hold is a conspiracy of the management.

We, the workers of Maruti Suzuki, Manesar are facing one of the toughest times in our struggle, with 149 of our fellow workers languishing in jail for the last more than 5 months (including all the 12 MSWU representatives). The bail application of 15 contract workers was rejected on 4th December 2012 by the Sessions Court, Gurgaon while all facts proved their innocence. This is being done, we suspect, only to keep us divided and demoralized. Another 66 permanent workers have been charged with non-bailable offense charges separate from the chargesheet of those already in Jail. 546 permanent and trainee workers have and another 2000 contract and apprentice workers have been terminated from their jobs, and we are fighting our case against the false and fabricated story of the management in their speaking order in the labour court.

In these two years, and specially in these 5 months, we are waging a relentless struggle against the anti-labour Maruti management, and we are fighting it out in the court, as well as in the streets, with our legitimate demands for reinstatement of terminated workers, release of arrested workers and investigation into the incident of 18th july 2012 by an impartial authority. What we face is an arrogant management and a government which openly takes the company’s side. Especially in these five months, we face everyday police harassment of not only ourselves, but also of our families. We continue to struggle, taking out rallies in Rohtak, Kaithal, Rewari, Faridabad, knocking on every possible elected representatives’ door, but are met with false promises. We have now realized the that this kind of corrupt anti-democratic worker attitude and open flouting of all labour laws is not only limited to our Maruti Suzuki but this is the general condition of all workers in the entire auto sector of industry. So with the demand of Union formation and to point out the illegal practice of contract workers system under which contract workers in the entire industrial belt in the NCR region are exploited, we took the initiative to campaign among all the workers of the entire NCR industrial belt of Gurgaon-Manesar-Dharuhera-Bawal-Faridabadoida-Ghaziabad, and organized an Auto Workers Convention on 9th December 2012 with our common demands. We again did a dharna on 19th December in Jantar Mantar where many Trade Unions across the spectrum came in support.  We will take our initiative to organize ourselves and other workers against the anti-worker companies and government in a more consolidated way in the coming days extending it in further areas till our demands are met.

We face a strong anti-worker management which has all the support of the government and administrative machinery. As the struggle continues, we appeal to all to stand in support by contributing to the struggle fund.
